Different Ways to Use British White Bulls in Your Operation

Regardless of what stage in your British White cattle journey you’re in. Chances are, at some point you’re going to want to diversify your herd’s genetics. When you get to that point or have already done that, it’s important to know what all of your options are when it comes to incorporating new genes (aka new British White bulls) into your herd.

Lease a British White Bull

When leasing a bull, there are several things that you should know and have in place before finalizing the deal. The very first and most important thing to consider is its economics. How many cows are you planning on breeding? For example, depending on how much the lease is, it might not be worth it to lease a bull when you could artificially inseminate them using bought semen, which we will get into below. The other thing to consider is your farm setup, some folks aren’t set up to have cows and bulls on-site throughout the year. You can always reach out to a reputable breeder to ask some questions about what they recommend for their own lease programs to see if it will be a good fit for you and your operation.

Buy Semen

Buying British White bull semen is also a very popular option when you are working on introducing new genetics to your herd. Just like with everything else, it has its pros and cons and should be examined carefully. The first thing to know is that when you buy semen, it needs to not only be bought from a reputable breeder, and shipped correctly, but it also needs to be timed correctly to use on your cows upon arriving. For some owners, that’s going to mean having the vet come out to artificially inseminate for you unless you know how to do it. Once again, the logistics of this option vary depending on how large your cow herd is. If you have a small herd or are only artificially inseminating a few cows then this might be a good option for you. We recommend consulting with your local vet or breeder to see if this is a good fit for you.

Embryo Transfer

Embryo Transfer is yet another way to introduce new genetics into your British White cattle herd. Although this option involved using a fertilized cow egg and transferring it to another cow to grow the baby. If you think about it, breeders typically only get one calf out of their good cows per year, by using this method, a producer can quickly multiply the genetics of the top females in their herd.

Add a British White Bull to Your Own Herd

The most common solution to adding more genetics to your British White cattle herd is to buy your own bull. While this is what most people think of when it’s time to expand, here at Black Label Farms we want to make sure you have all the facts before introducing new genetics into your herd.
